Another tough retired Dodger jersey number. This is from the same collector that broke up his Giant jersey collection as he also broke up his Dodger collection. A few years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier with Brooklyn, the Dodgers continued to be at the forefront of the game's civil rights movement, signing numerous Negro League players such as Jim Gilliam, a speedy second baseman and leadoff hitter who excelled in the 1950s after having taken over Jackie's position. This home white uniform from Gilliam's playing days is special as "Junior's" number 19 has since been retired by the Dodgers organization. The all-original home jersey with no alterations features the iconic "Dodgers" name on the front with red "19" below and blue felt "19" on the back. There is Rawlings Hall of Fame size 42 tagging on the front tail with "Gilliam 60" stitched below the tag. There are also washing instructions and "Set 1 1960" tagging inside the front tail. The jersey shows very nice use. Gilliam came to Brooklyn from the Negro Leagues' Baltimore Elite Giants, where he was voted an All-Star three straight years from 1948 to 1950. Upon his transition to the Major Leagues, he spent two seasons with the Triple-A Montreal Royals (same as Robinson had done in 1946) and led the International League in runs scored both seasons. In 1953, he made the Dodgers' roster and went on to capture the National League Rookie of the Year award. there are a few small holes about a 1/16 of a inc that appear to be from mounting but do not affect the appearance of jersey and are just mentioned for accuracy.
