Representing one of the most significant artifacts in the history of NASCAR racing is this original 1973 Daytona 500 winner’s trophy won by Richard Petty, NASCAR’s most infamous driver earning him the nickname “The King.” The trophy has since been signed by Petty on the bottom and on front at a rare public signing session at the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman, North Carolina. This is the link https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/richard-petty-autograph-1973-daytona-500-trophy/. Rarely are such historic artifacts representing any sport offered for sale, never mind one such as this representing the sports most iconic participant from the most prestigious annual race in NASCAR history won for the very first time in 1959 by the patriarch of the Petty family, Richard’s father Lee Petty. Since 1982 the Daytona 500 has been the season opening race of the prestigious NASCAR Cup Racing Series with nobody having won more Daytona 500 races than The King himself, with Richard winning the race a record seven times. The trophy itself stands an impressive approximately 36 inches tall, weighing more than 15 pounds with a design fitting a King. It was only due to a small misfortune that this original trophy awarded to Petty developed a crack with our consignor having the good fortune of securing this most prestigious award directly from the insurance company handling the matter. This original trophy has since been repaired with the break in a area where it is not noticeable and would represent the most iconic addition to even the most advanced NASCAR, automotive or sports memorabilia collection. Richard Petty was named Rookie of the Year in 1959, the same year his father Lee won the inaugural Daytona 500 race. Over a racing career that spanned 3 decades, Richard Petty accumulated more than 200 victories, winning the Daytona 500 himself on seven occasions and the NASCAR Championship seven times too. Petty has been one of the biggest influences to the sport of racing; who in his very last race in 1992 raced against future NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon making his Winston Cup debut. “The King” has become synonymous with Richard Petty throughout automobile racing globally. This trophy stands as a testament to Richard Petty’s enduring title that will stand immortal throughout time. Trophy has its original patina and wear. Wood base has wear with some chipping.  Julien's Auction had the Richard Petty collection with his 1981 Daytona 500  win trophy (estimate:$200,000-$300,000) the last of his seventh Daytona 500 wins.
